Don't Be Afraid of the Dark - Photography Exhibition

Nevada County Arts Council along with its community partners, the Cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City and the County of Nevada, will announce the winners of the "Don't Be Afraid of the Dark" photo contest at an Opening Reception on Wednesday, July 31 at the Eric Rood Center. The night-time photography competition received an impressive 74 submissions, and was launched earlier this year to encourage residents and visitors to limit light pollution and enjoy the natural beauty of the night sky as part of the Dark Skies movement.

“We were so impressed by the number and variety of submissions from our community. The stunning images highlight a variety of photographic and lighting techniques while showcasing the natural and cultural places iconic to Nevada County,” said Heather Heckler, GVNC Cultural District Program Manager and administrator of the contest.

The winning photographs across three submission categories—professional, emerging/amateur and youth—along with our People’s Choice award will be unveiled at the Opening Reception on July 31 at 4:30pm. The community is invited to attend this free event to celebrate these talented photographers, view their work and learn more about the importance of preserving our remarkable dark skies. Along with presentations and awards, the evening will include a slideshow of all submitted photos in the Board Chambers.

“We believe that photography has the power to transport us and inspire us to connect with and ultimately protect the night. Light pollution is on the increase, with many in pursuit of the beauty and bliss of our night skies. Rural spaces and protected wild lands are perfect for discovering what is hidden during daylight hours, or by the artificial lighting that crowds California’s growing communities,” said Eliza Tudor, Executive Director of Nevada County Arts Council.

For those who cannot attend the opening reception, the exhibit will remain on display through September 18th, 2024. The contest is part of a broader initiative by the cities of Grass Valley and Nevada City and the County of Nevada to preserve our regional night skies.
