Nevada County Arts Council, as State-Local Partner with California Arts Council and Nevada County Board of Supervisors, invites nominations and self-nominations for the position of Nevada County Poet Laureate!

After being appointed by Nevada County Arts Council and confirmed by Nevada County Board of Supervisors, our Poet Laureate serves for a minimum term of one year.

The role of the Nevada County Poet Laureate is to act as an ambassador for poetry in Nevada County, sharing the art of poetry, and engaging with the community generously, participating in public readings, engaging in dialogue, and supporting intergenerational learning.

As an ambassador for poetry, our Poet Laureate will lend agency and voice for poets of all ages, and nurture valuation for poetry as a means of creative expression. Learn more about the Nevada County Poet Laureate program here.

Review Criteria

Our Poet Laureate will:

• Be the author of a body of curated work of quality

• Have a signifiant local presence as a poet

• Have a history of substantial poetic engagement in the community

• Be willing to engage with and inspire Nevada County youth, working closely with our Nevada County Youth Poet Laureate

• Envision and implement a meaningful community project that extends throughout their term and that reaches communities who may not have previously experienced poetry in their lives.

Review Process

Nevada County Arts Council will appoint an ad hoc literary review panel comprising no fewer than three community members, who will make recommendations based upon the criteria above.

Eligibility

Nominations shall be limited to current residents of Nevada County over the age of 24.

Deadline

Nominations are due with Nevada County Arts Council via our online submission forms by 5pm on October 1, 2024.

Nevada County literary organizations and groups, the literary community in general, and members of the public are encouraged to nominate a Poet Laureate by using the form below, called “Form to nominate another.”

Announcing the new Nevada County Poet Laureate

Nevada County's new Poet Laureate will be announced locally through traditional and social media, and will be presented at a special public ceremony in November 2024.
