Business Spotlight Wolf Craft School
Leslie Barbazette and Jay Morgan—the visionaries behind Wolf Craft School—share what brought them here and what they hope to bring to the community.
GVNC: Tell us a little about yourself and how you came to live in Nevada County. Wolf Craft: We were looking to get out of an urban environment and Leslie’s family settled here in the 1850s and owned the land where the Fairgrounds is now located, and later her great-grandmother ran the Bret Harte Inn in the 1950s. This history, in addition to the vibrant arts community, natural beauty, and slower pace of life, drew us to Nevada County.
With our background in fashion and expertise in blacksmithing and graphic design, we discovered a shared calling: to create a space for hands-on exploration, cultural enrichment, and a sense of belonging. Through Wolf Craft School, we seek to honor Grass Valley’s heritage while shaping its future—nurturing a place where creativity flourishes at a gentle pace, and everyone is welcome to join in crafting a vibrant, enduring community. We were overwhelmed by the outpouring of support from the local community during our Board of Supervisors meeting. Reading the dozens of letters and hearing the public comments to the Supervisors on our behalf was very humbling and encouraging.
GVNC: What does Wolf Craft hope to bring to the community? What is your vision and what are you most excited about? Wolf Craft: Wolf Craft School is a nonprofit organization dedicated to reconnecting people with the art of traditional craftsmanship in an inclusive and welcoming environment. We provide hands-on learning experiences in various craft disciplines led by premier artists from around the globe. The idea has always been to embrace, preserve, and revitalize heritage arts and crafts skills for future generations using sustainable practices, honoring the environment, and fostering a sense of creative community.
In a world where we are growing increasingly disconnected and dependent on technology, these time-tested arts and crafts disciplines encourage us to slow down. We are very excited to build a farm on our land and have animals like sheep, alpaca and goats and teach people how to process their fiber to make yarn and sweaters in our sheep-to-sweater classes. Once the school is built on Wolf Road, it is going to be a magical place.
GVNC: Where are you located and where can people find your classes? Wolf Craft: We are currently located at The Tinnery at 205C York Street in Nevada City while we build the school on the land on Wolf Road in South County. The Tinnery is a beautiful studio space in a historic building in the heart of Nevada City. It allows us to open our offerings to the community ahead of a full launch on Wolf Road. The response so far has been incredible. Our classes and workshops fill up fast and we love all of the collaborations emerging with local and visiting artists.
GVNC: What do you love about the Cultural District? Wolf Craft: We love the vibrant, creative heartbeat that pulses through Grass Valley, Nevada City and Truckee. They are all brimming with stories—gold-rush narratives and modern-day artistry—and that spirit of collaboration is tangible everywhere. We are enamored with the region’s natural beauty and preserved architecture. They help keep a sense of magic alive; it’s not hard to feel inspired when historic storefronts sit just a short drive from places like the Yuba River and other local gems like Bitney Springs where you can get natural spring water for free. What stands out most is how the community embraces creativity at all levels. Whether it’s in a gallery space, a performance venue, or someone’s backyard, there’s a shared devotion to art as a means of both expression and connection. Just look at how artists and the general public come together at events like Hot Summer Nights, Victorian Christmas and Cornish Christmas to celebrate local artisans. It's remarkable the generosity, and how people are ready to share their knowledge and support each other’s work. This synergy between people, place, and purpose gives us fuel for Wolf Craft School classes and events.
GVNC: What’s coming up next for you? Wolf Craft: Well, there are a ton of exciting things coming up: lots of classes on the schedule at the Tinnery. Getting building permits and breaking ground on the land hopefully this summer. And of course, fundraising to make it all happen.
