A CALL TO POETS | POEMS FOR PEACE

Nevada County Arts Council is inviting people of all ages to share short poems that offer hope for the millions of children who are affected by war. We are aware that the conflict in Gaza is taking place at the same time as conflicts around the world where children and young people are involved, whether in the Congo, Sudan, Yemen, or Ukraine, to name a few.

We particularly invite young people to respond to the idea of writing Poems for Peace. This is an open invitation to write a poem or short piece of creative writing in response to the following question.

In a world where children and young people are often brought into conflicts not of their making, how do we respond? If young people would like a couple of optional prompts we offer the following as ways to start writing:

Prompt 1: “Dear You....”
Or:

Prompt 2: “I find a glimmer…”

Through our partnership with “Dream A Difference”— an international program which connected students from our most remote elementary and middle schools here in Nevada County with young people in war torn countries, pre-pandemic — poems by young people will be captured and shared through the @dreamadifference Instagram feed.

We also welcome poems sent by email to poetry@nevadacountyarts.org.
